Different programs are run by different offices. Medicaid is state-run; Medicare is federal but has a free counseling program in every state; and a separate state agency regulates Medigap and handles insurance complaints. These directories point you to the right one.

Not sure which office you need? For Medicare questions, start with your SHIP or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). For Medicaid or CHIP, contact your state Medicaid agency. For a problem with a Medigap policy or an insurance company, your state insurance department.
