What state insurance departments do for consumers
Each state has a Department of Insurance (also called a Division of Insurance or Commissioner of Insurance). These agencies regulate Medigap (Medicare Supplement) insurance policies sold by private insurers in their state. They also license and oversee insurance agents, handle consumer complaints against insurers and agents, and provide information about insurance rights and protections.
State insurance departments can help you if you:
- Have questions about a Medigap or Medicare Advantage policy you're considering
- Want to file a complaint about an insurer, agent, or broker (coverage denial, premium problems, unfair sales practices)
- Need help understanding your policy or getting a problem resolved
- Are experiencing difficulty with claims or billing
- Suspect insurance fraud
